Dr. Fred Muhletaler works in Florida, United States.

Dr. Fred Muhletaler, who graduated from Medicine class XLIV (2004), performed the first kidney transplant with robotic surgery in Doha, Qatar. The Peruvian urologist and oncologist’s medical feat came after nine years of training with Dr. Mani Menon (United States), one of the world’s pioneers in robotic surgery.

The operation was performed on a 62-year-old man with end-stage renal disease, whose transplanted kidney was donated by a deceased person. Regarding this intervention, Dr. Fred Muhletaler explained to La República: “It consisted in the placement of two abdominal ports, just as a laparoscopic operation. It is placed a special port where a small incision is made in the abdomen and a “hood” is placed on so that air does not escape in the pneumoperitoneum, inside the abdomen. Then, through this incision, the kidney is placed into the abdomen, and that’s when the patient’s iliac vessels are connected to the vessel of the kidney to be transplanted, followed by the ureter, to reattach the bladder finally.”

Can we operate like that in Peru? For the Heredian doctor, some conditions should first be fulfilled. “Number one, surgical experience. Someone with extensive experience who knows how to master technology. However, from a monetary point of view, capital investment and establishing a medical service company are also needed. While every company must be economically viable, it should also have a space for social work.”We invite you to read the complete interview below that was made by the newspaper La República:
