Dr. Magaly Blas, a professor and researcher at our university, was awarded the prestigious Fulbright scholarship granted by the Fulbright Commission. This distinction, obtained after a rigorous selection process, highlights her exceptional talent and dedication to scientific research.
The Fulbright scholarship, this time aimed at Peruvian women with doctoral degrees in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) areas, allowed Dr. Blas to embark on an enriching experience as a visiting researcher in the United States. For four months, she collaborated closely with distinguished researchers from the Faculty of Public Health at the University of Arizona, addressing diverse areas of interest such as One Health, Rural Health, Indigenous Health, and Health Innovation.
During her stay in the United States, the Heredian researcher actively contributed by performing presentations for graduate and undergraduate students and developing highly relevant public health research proposals. In addition, she had the invaluable opportunity to immerse herself in the University of Arizona‘s work with Community Health Workers and explore the Mexican border to study humanitarian interventions for migrants.Among the highlights of her experience, Dr. Blas visited state-of-the-art research facilities such as Biosphere-2, a simulation center of five different biomes used to assess the impact of climate change. She also met with one of the leaders of the University of Arizona’s Innovation Center, known for its leading global startup incubator. He was honored to attend the presentation and reception honoring Dr. Peter Agree, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry.
In 1946, Senator J. William Fulbright founded the Fulbright Program to promote educational and cultural exchange between the United States and other countries, seeking to allow future leaders to observe and better understand institutions, cultures, and different societies.
Visiting other states
Dr. Blas was not limited to Arizona; she also had the opportunity to travel to other states, such as New Mexico, where she learned about the culture of the Navajo Indian communities. In a few days, she will travel to Washington, D.C., where she will work with a group of experts on institutionalizing Social Innovations in Health at the Pan American Health Organization.
«These months at the University of Arizona have allowed me to expand my vision on Public Health and Global Health and have helped me to see with new eyes the interventions we do in Peru and how these can be expanded to solve other health problems,» said our researcher. In summary, this prestigious Fulbright scholarship has greatly enriched Dr. Magaly Blas‘s professional and academic experience, consolidating her commitment to scientific research and her contribution to advancing public health in our country and internationally.
