The sound of the rainforest surrounds every step. In the distance, the calls of animals and the buzzing of insects blend with the murmur of a group of researchers sharing their knowledge in the dim morning light. For Field School participants, the Amazon is not just a destination: it is a living classroom where science is learned in its real-life context.
From July 14 to 23, 2025, students, professionals, and researchers will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge in this natural laboratory through the Infectious Diseases and Public Health Field School, a training program that combines innovation, excellence, and learning in one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the world.
IQUITOS: THE EPICENTER OF RESEARCH
Located in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon, Iquitos is a city where scientific research and biodiversity intertwine, offering a unique environment for understanding the impact of infectious diseases on public health. The combination of its environmental richness and the health challenges facing the region make this territory a key epicenter for learning about global health.
Organized by UPCH – YALE Teodoro E. Gildred Laboratories of the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, in collaboration with the University of Antwerp and the Global Health Institute, with support from VLIR-UOS, this program represents a bridge between theory and practice, providing specialized training in field research, epidemiology, and global health.
For the PhD. Dionicia Gamboa, researcher and professor of the program, said this experience is a unique opportunity to learn in context:
«Exploring the Amazon not only expands scientific knowledge, but also allows us to understand the real impact of public health on communities that depend on research to improve their quality of life. It is an adventure that will transform your way of seeing science».

Each day of Field School 2025 is an opportunity to observe, analyze, and learn. Through sessions with specialists, field tours, and guided practical experiences, participants will develop a deeper understanding of infectious diseases in tropical environments.
EXPLORE THE JUNGLE AND OPEN NEW DOORS TO SCIENCE
For ten days, participants will learn from specialists from leading global health institutions, expanding their knowledge in diagnostic methodologies, epidemiological surveillance, and real-time data analysis. Furthermore, the program fosters a multidisciplinary approach, allowing immersion in Amazonian culture and promoting a comprehensive understanding of public health in the region.
