On July 14, the 2025 edition of the Infectious Diseases and Public Health Field School officially began. This intensive training program is organized by the UPCH – Yale Teodoro E. Gildred Laboratories, in collaboration with the Global Health Institute at the University of Antwerp and supported by VLIR-UOS.

Over the course of ten days, fifteen participants from Belgium, United States, Israel, Vietnam, Kenya, and Peru will engage in an immersive educational experience in both Iquitos and Lima. The program integrates theoretical sessions, practical workshops, field visits, and tours of key public health institutions.

In the initial days, participants attended academic sessions, guided tours, and interactive exchanges at centers such as CIRNA (Center for Research on Amazonian Natural Resources) of the Universidad Nacional de la Amazonía Peruana (UNAP) and the insectary of the Loreto Regional Health Directorate (GERESA), where they explored regional vector surveillance strategies and witnessed collaborative efforts to strengthen public health systems in the Peruvian Amazon.

On July 18, the group will conduct a field visit to the community of Salvador, located in the district of Mazán. This excursion will allow participants to apply data collection techniques and gain firsthand insights into the scientific, social, and logistical challenges faced by community health initiatives in highly vulnerable areas.

“This initiative brings applied scientific research into a real-world, complex setting like the Peruvian Amazon. Participants not only acquire methodological skills but also gain an in-depth understanding of the concrete challenges in global health,” noted Dr. Dionicia Gamboa, professor in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Sciences at UPCH’s Faculty of Science and Engineering and General Coordinator of the Teodoro E. Gildred UPCH–Yale Laboratories.

This year’s cohort includes students, professionals, and faculty members from prestigious national and international institutions.

Now in its third edition, the Field School reaffirms Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia’s commitment to academic excellence, the internationalization of its programs, and the promotion of innovative solutions to combat emerging and neglected diseases affecting the world’s most vulnerable populations.
