Living a healthy lifestyle is essential to maintaining good physical, mental, and emotional health. Combining habits such as recreational sports activity, a balanced and nutritious diet, stress management, adequate rest, and social connection can have very positive effects on our overall well-being.

This topic was explained by Dr. Luis Gutiérrez Campos, a specialist in public and community health and head of the Institutional Development office at the Bonilla Health Network in Callao, on the program Cayetanamente en Cayetano+, hosted by Dr. Dany Araujo.

Dr. Gutiérrez defined a healthy lifestyle as «the forms of behavior and attitudes that we have or develop to face our daily needs and solve individual and collective needs. We build it from the conception of life; it starts there, and it is the environment in which the person develops. The lifestyles and the way of behaving are configured over time.»

Dr. Gutiérrez added that there are critical factors in a healthy lifestyle. For example, as regards nutrition, «In today’s world, out of every eleven people, one suffers from diabetes. Every nine seconds, a person dies of this disease. This is linked to overweight and obesity. Physical inactivity is linked to thirty-two million deaths per year in the world and is related to 37 types of diseases. Stress also accompanies almost all diseases.»

In addition, Dr. Gutiérrez referred to the nutritional strategies that must address the psychological aspects because the solution is not «solved with a recipe book or a standard, but with the motivation, the attitude, the posture that one puts with the perception of risk regarding what one is eating, that is important, and that is what we have to work on in people.»

«Moreover, several psychological methods are working on the issue of healthy eating. I think it is a national policy still a little weak, but it must be strengthened,» added Dr. Gutiérrez.

Among the recommendations of the public and community health specialist, is regular physical exercise because it strengthens the body, improves mood, reduces stress and increases energy. In addition, he emphasized the importance of a balanced diet, which provides the necessary nutrients for the optimal functioning of the body and mind to prevent chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, as well as the role of socialization and the maintenance of healthy social relationships in mental health.

Another aspect of having as a habit is using free time in recreational activities to recharge energies and maintain a balance in life.

In summary, adopting a healthy lifestyle involves taking care of all aspects of well-being, which can lead to a fuller and more satisfying life. Thus, it promotes emotional well-being and mental and physical health.
